National "Wing Fest" One for the Record Books!
Attendance and Competitive Eating Records Highlight Buffalo
Event!
Never before have a half million chicken wings been consumed
in one place at one time, but that's just what happened in
Buffalo, NY on Labor Day weekend!
The occasion was the 6th annual NATIONAL BUFFALO WING FESTIVAL,
which this year drew 74 thousand visitors from throughout
the country…folks who consumed 25 tons of "Buffalo Wings".
Nobody ate more chicken wings, however, than competitive eater
Sonya Thomas of Arlington, Virginia, who set a new OFFICIAL
WORLD RECORD, during the event's UNITED STATES CHICKEN WING
EATING CHAMPIONSHIPS.
Thomas, known on the competitive eating circuit as "The Black
Widow", chewed and swallowed her way through an astonishing
173 chicken wings in twelve minutes.
Still "hungry" on day two of the festival, the one hundred
pound "champ" also took top honors in the popular "BUFFALO
BUFFET BOWL" where she set another record, by eating 5.95
pounds of pizza, pierogies, beef, chicken wings, and "hog
wings".
The more than thirty local and national restaurants who participated
in this year's NATIONAL BUFFALO WING FESTIVAL also competed
against one another, with several taking home awards for their
chicken wing sauces.
Winners include Ker's Wing House for BEST TRADIONAL EXTRA
HOT SAUCE, Wing Street for BEST TRADITIONAL HOT SAUCE, and
Bocce's Pizza of Buffalo for BEST TRADITIONAL BARBEQUE.
Another highlight of the 2007 NATIONAL BUFFLO WING FESTIVAL
was the introduction of two more chicken wing "pioneers" into
the BUFFALO WING HALL OF FLAME.
The inductees are Jim Disbrow and Scott Lowery, who are the
founders of BUFFALO WILD WINGS, which began in Ohio in 1982
and now has 450 company-owned and franchised restaurants across
the country.
The NATIONAL BUFFALO WING FESTIVAL has become the "Super Bowl"
of chicken wing gatherings and competitions and has been showcased
by such national media as the FOOD NETWORK, PBS, the TRAVEL
CHANNEL, NBC's THE TODAY SHOW, the BBC, and FOX AND FRIENDS.
This year, Emeril Lagasse sent a film crew for footage to
be used in a future show on Buffalo Wings. In addition, The
PBS show ROADSIDE ADVENTURES was on hand for this year's festival,
which was also the culmination for an upcoming documentary
film, entitled THE GREAT BUFFALO CHICKEN WING HUNT.
THE NATIONAL BUFFALO WING FESTIVAL is the creation of Buffalo's
own Drew Cerza, a.k.a. the "WING KING". Drew says even he
is surprised by the phenomenal success of this year's event.
Says Cerza, "The overwhelming attendance confirms my belief
that Buffalo Wings are, without a doubt, AMERICA'S FAVORITE
FOOD".
In addition to raising international recognition for "Buffalo
Wings" and their birthplace in Buffalo, NY., Cerza and the
NATIONAL BUFFALO WING FESTIVAL have also raised more than
$105,000 for local charities.
